  1. 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  3. 1 tsp baking powder
  4. 1/2 tsp baking soda
  5. 1/4 tsp salt
  6. 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  7. 1 cup granulated sugar
  8. 2 large eggs
  9. 2 tsp vanilla extract
  10. 1/2 cup milk
  11. Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  12. Buttercream frosting
  13. Sprinkles or candy toppings

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and line muffin tin with Valentine cupcake liners.
  • In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla.
  • Mix in dry ingredients, alternating with milk until smooth.
  • Add food coloring if desired, then fill cupcake liners 2/3 full.
  • Bake 16–18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  • Frost with buttercream and decorate with your favorite Valentine toppings.

Notes

  1. For extra fun, fill the cupcakes with jam or chocolate before baking. Try strawberry buttercream or classic cream cheese frosting!
